A Separation (2011)

A Separation is the first Iranian film to win an Oscar. It is a story of a family where mother and father are on a verge of a divorce, the grandfather is suffering with alzheimer’s disease, and their 11 year old daughter is forced to be torn between the two of her parents.

What I think won an Oscar for this film is the way culture is explored in the narrative, both in terms of women’s’ role in the Iranian society, the conflict of social class, as well as the role of religion in people’s lives and decision-making.
